what's happening way up there...

At 7.31am on Friday, a large empty rocket hull the size of an SUV and travelling at 9 000km/h smacked into the moon’s surface in what will go down in history as one of the oddest and most expensive ways to go divining for water.

The impact, in a crater called Cabeus at the south pole, was supposed to kick up a 10km-high plume of debris. Four minutes later, a following probe, the Opel Corsa-sized Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS for short, followed the rocket through the cloud of dust and rubble, taking a flurry of pictures before smashing into the smoking hole left by its predecessor.

Sadly for rocket science, the pictures, which the scientists hoped would determine whether there is water on the moon – and which cost $79m to take – were fuzzy

  1. It is a sad story. What can we do with the $79milions?How many citizens in the poor country which do not have food or enough supplement will be saved with the $79millions? If we used the $79m to do safe our planet,do green on it,replant, threatment and teach ours next generation about go green.I believe that,it will not just pieces of photoes.I can understand the urgency to find another planet for replace our planet. But the more important things is why dont they safe our planet first, before find another planet? Why not safe it first.Prevent better than cure.

  3. I think, the scientist tried to explore something new for human needs. They made an exploration about the way up there..and hopefully they can create their own history if they succeed for the experiment..unfortunately,the pictures were just fuzzy..their efforts for this experiment should be appreciated but…the amount of cost,$79m,for the failure..it means nothing..why do not the scientists spend the cost in helping the needy or find other alternative way to fulfill human needs. the reality showed us how human especially the intelligent one can let other important things just for the experiment that very costly…

  4. the determination of scientist to explore the moon and find if there any water resources on the moon are good..but, its become worth when the such big amount $79m use and got nothing..the picture were blur and the overall projects are failed...can you imagine that, the amount we can use to help the needy people in the world...we can build school, hospital for the civilian..i think they know the percent of success on this project are low...so, why they still want to run this project???i did not understand the scientist...on the earth has many project that need money to run and success..it can easy man work...so, don't waste the money and time bro...

  5. what will you think when an experiment that cost $79m just being waste like that??nothing that can be achieved from the experiment that was failed to fulfilled the objective of the experiment..that what was ordinary people think..but not the scientist that were experienced the excitement when they going through the experiment..at least they must be something that they find through the experiment.and with that failure..they already move a step forward with the data that they have during the experiment.many people said that it was a devastated when the experiment was failed.but as we can see many of scientist before this do not find a beautiful ending at the first time they do the experiment..but many they have tried for hundreds time before they success.this mean that they find something from each failure..thats why we can see some of words that say many people does not realize how closed they are to success when they give up.from this phrases we have to understand that we cannot give up but we have to keep on trying because we dont know when we will achieved our goal.....

  6. 79m?US Dollar? If change to RM?How much would it be?? The authorities pour such huge amount of money in order to do a research on the moon but the result is disappointed.I think it is important to do it although the cost is extremely high. If there has water on the moon , is that possible for human to live on it? This is not a dream, it can be achieved someday. If can find the water on the moon,it will be a greatest discovery in science history. So, i feel that further explorations should be planned to find out the existence of water on the moon. But, the cost should be under estimated.

  7. In my opinion, to improve our knowledge is not wrong. Someone said, we, as a calif in this world must study about world to gain our knowledge. Scientist that hope to find the water at moon is great and very good plan. But I strongly remind here we also must consider the thing that is more important than that. $79m is not a low cost I think. From that money we can use it as charity. As we all know, there are many people are poor and war victim. Why not we use that cost to help them. Instead, who is the state that start the war? absolutely, america is the answer. So, why don't they take this responsibilities, use that wasted money to help these people.

  8. hhmmmm......
firstly, good job for that scientist which tried to explore the moon....next time that scientist can tried to explore the sun..I think it is more amazing and more adventure...huhuhuh....I think that scientist try to find the alternative source to human..IT is nice job,but as we known there are did not have any source..If have, how we can to bring that source from there back to earth...It very difficult. Then, about the picture..It is very ravage..that money we can use it to do another research...But...it already happened..

  9. When i heard about this news, i was quite embarrass. Does all the scientist spend money without thinking about the tax payer's money? When i came into university, those lecturers always teach us that engineer should use the most cost saving ways to do project, is this cost saving? 79million may sound little for them, but it is something more that you can imagine for those at Africa. It is sad to see how scientist still can't find an alternative way to do this experiment. What happen if they prove that moon have water? Do they really think that human can actually live at other planet besides earth at this moment with our current technology? If you fail to plan, then you are plan to fail.

  10. in my opinion, i have two comments here. first, it is a good idea to find out another way to get a water. but! not by booming the moon.. it is a crazy way to crash a moon just to find out a water.. and also the cost is $79m is a big amount just to find out a water. we can use the amount to find out a water in other ways such as use the ground water or sea water by distilled the sea water. if our moon will gone, how we can live it? we depend to the moon for a calendar.. and for muslim, moon is important to find out silamic months.. and also other's religion depend to the moon. hmm.. i'm strongly disagree with the scientist way.. better use the $79m for other ways... WE HAVE TO PROTECT OUR LOVELY MOON...

  11. 79$millions???????
what such an idiot things to do.
if they give to me,i will definetly become like Donald Trumps, don't have to worried about works anymore.i want you to think?
what is the purpose to know at the moon have water or not?maybe for science subject in the class but when it comes to 79$millions,is it meaningful?
what is the advantages that they got?
don't they think about the consequences of the mission, maybe one day,the moon will explode and become dust in the universe because of the mission?we don't know because we are here,on the earth,an astronounts live at there only for a few days,so they don't know 100% what happen at the moon.I want to advice all of the readers here, think before you do something. Are all the things you do meaningless or not.

  12. Definitely, I was upset with what had happen. Why the need to hurt moon like that? Why the need to smacked the moon’s surface by a large empty rocket?? Are they never thinking about the impact of their decisions? I knew about their purpose is to investigate about existent of water on the surface of moon, I appreciate their efforts but for me it was not the right way to do that. Maybe I am not intelligent and expert than that scientists to critic and condemn about their efforts but I am says as the natural lover.  Why we need to destroy the beauty of moon? Are they not feeling guilty to our next generation? For me, even though we want to investigate and know more detail about something, we do not have to make a destroy it. We can avoid from destroy it by think more and discuss more with other scientists from all over the world. Safe the moon please! Be the lover of the moon. 

  13. This is wasted, just for a picture without any success and booming the moon inspires of giving afford to protect our planet. Why scientists want to try their hard to discover or search weather existing of water on the other planets. We should appreciate that our planet had source of water since long time ago. Way to protect our planet is by preventing the pollutions happen. If the scientists were found the water on the moon, is that human can stay at the moon without air? Absolutely cannot. They just curious only.

  14. They should use the 79million in a right way. They can help all the people in poor country and not let them suffer in their life.79 million maybe not enough for a country but it can help them a bit

    ReplyDelete
  15. that very teribble..scientist who want to search water sources must think before they start because it cost $79 milion..it maybe good but also have a bad effect..this project are useless because the project are fail..with $79 milion we can help our world with many thing..why not we share this money to help others??think about that..sharing is caring..

  16. In my opinion, if the scientist want to explore something new that can save our world is the good thing...but, if the scientist just want to go to the moon and take the picture, there are something wrong in the exploration...and what makes sad is, the picture was taken is flurry and fuzzy,..the other reason of scientist to go to the moon is to find if there water resources in the moon. the cost to go to the moon is 79 million and the result is so disappointed..it‘s really idiot thing...it's better if we used the money for other reason…we can save our planet by using the 79 million...and also we can use the money to help poor people that cannot effort their life...there are many thing that we can do it by using the money...we should save our planet first before we make something that meaningless…

  17. the idea to explore the moon whether there is water or not is a good idea...because as a curious human,we always want to know anything happen in this universe, not only in earth..it's one of knowledge,right?...but,as a ordinary people,we also made mistake that out of reach..so,before do something huge and important that cost a lot of money,we must think and do researches..so that we will not regret what we have done...this project cost us $79 million,it is a lot of money..we can do a lot of things with the money..such as charity, build something that give advantages to man or to develope certain country that need it..unfortunely,this project is failed..if it's success, imagine what we will get..we will get something new and maybe can do something with that result..right??..but,we must think about the moon itself..this project must have hurt our moon right...think again if want to do this sort of project..save our moon!!the end..

  18. I hate them.. For me the scientist should not wasted the money doing this experiment.. It is because this experiment will failed. There is no advantages for people in this world..With $79m the scientist can used for our country in the future. It is very crazy experiment. There are a lot things can we do it to get water resource. It is big amount to do this experiment..Without moon we loss everything. Some times i fell so proud with them because they tried to do this experiment..Even it is very dangerous for them..But every problem have way to solve it..It is depend on us to think and take any way to protect our moon and everything around us. Moon is the one of generous gift from god to us. Moon will brighten our earth every night.. Why we want to destroyed it.why????. Start from now we have to appreciate all awards from god. We also have to think before doing and make a decision. Do not be a selfish person…Love moon forever…..

  20. I think I agree what the scientists have done in determining whether the water is existing or not in the moon. But the amount used for doing the experiment is not very reasonable since the result is not satisfied, as a human being we should think wisely before do the experiment.$79m is the big amount but actually the amount can be used for other benefits. And, the way they do is very dangerous because if the moon become destroyed it will affect our earth.. we should protect our moon because the moon brighten our earth every night and also it very beautiful.

  21. $79m for the ‘fuzzy’ image..????!It does not make any sense... The first word that crossed in my mind before the experiment done is ‘fabulous’ but then after the experiment it becomes ‘ridiculous'...Why it’s happened??I think the efforts of the scientists are not enough to prove that the experiment is successful because the images were blurred. Maybe there are other factors that should be focused on. There are many ways for the scientists to show us the value of human being to our community in terms of their experiment. History has proved that many experiments can improve our life with the small amount. Nowadays, why not the scientists learn from the past and make it as a guideline in conducting new experiment. However, we should be proud to their spirit even the experiment is failed they still making the research to prove the existence of water at the moon for our next generation.

  22. wow....$79m wast waste just like that.you know with that money we can use to help people who needed.water in the moon??have they know the water have up there??most people know the experiment will failed.other than that,it will be destroy our moon right!if moon destroyed what will happen to us in the night.always dark and we can do nothing without light.

  23. hmmmm....

what can i comment about this article...

first of all it involve an amount of money which is 79m, and it is quite a big amount. in my opinion of spending a 79m on the moon it is better for the scientist to do en experiment about underground water because if we see our country itself we only use 2% of underground water and we will increase the amount by next year, yet if they doesn't like to use underground water it is batter for the scientist to spend the money for doing water treatment. it is much better to built rather than to destroy, isn't it? secondly moon is one of the nature.. the earth gravity is depends on the moon. many of the earth system is depending on the moon like the sea, month circle, and many more lets say if the experiment does something to the moon and there is a crack on the moon and in a long period of itself the moon can be destroy by itself. so what are the scientist going to do. are they are going to spend another 79m to fix the moon and if the want to fix the moon i doesn't think that the amount is enough for fixing the moon. and if something happen to the moon the air level will not unstable, there are going to be a terrible disaster which i could not imagine just like big flood, tsunami, and the earthquake also can be happen anywhere because the gravity in unstable.
when i heard about this article i was saying of my good what would happen to the earth,
    i love the earth,
if the earth without the see the earth will be thirsty,
tis lately we are always celebrate the victory which is finally will destroy everything,
what is the use of brain matured when in our soul is still young and fresh,
until when this earth has to suffer.

  24. i can imagine how that big amount of money can do with a better idea by saving our planet. Those people who are involved in the searching should figure that out first. stop the wars. help the poor. save our environment. they should know about that earlier.

  25. the idea is brilliant but the implementation is quite unreasonable.
79 million can afford to feed everychild in nigeria, save thousands of dying whales and build new home for the katrina hurricane's victim.

well, they can be proud of that because of the technology but think back open-wide,
do actually everyone get the benefits?

  26. $79m?????that is such a lots of money..for me, it just waste our money.. with that money, we can buy a lots of thing..also to develop our country..but, nowadays the scientific and aerospace study is really important to us..science is really important to us to ensure our life will be better from day to day..if i have given a chance to follow that crew of astronauts, i’ll go..i really want to see closely the space..surely it is so beautiful compared than just see from the pictures..lately, Malaysia had sent our first astronaut commonly known as Sheikh Muzaffar Shukor to the space..this is such a memorable story to us..now, we have our own astronaut..so, who will be the next??maybe me..who knows..huhuhu, just wait and see=)

  27. what can i conclude here, is that science is more than just money. the value of $79m spent for the event is nothing compare to its objective. even though its considered failed. but i beleive, 1 day we will know the fact whether there are water at moon or not. the thing is, i hope this failure will act as the platform to all the scienties to prevent its happen again.

besides that, this article also tell us about other countries space technologies. By my prediction, this event may be done by the russians or the eruopean scienties. we can see here, how futher malaysia are left behind with their technologies.. how sad it is...:(

  28. To change..one has to take a lot of risks..they have to sacrifices money, their belongings and in some other cases, lives!..it's the same in this case..the scientist try to explore a new thing that can benefit mankind in concept of surviving..they have to take the risks no matter how..I think it is worth it to spend $79m.

  29. • A history was stated as an empty rocket hull which traveled in high speed smacked into moon surface and it really amazed me as it is the oddest and most expensive ways to go divining for water. Then, a probe was passing through the rocket, taking a flurry picture before it smash onto the surface. It really disappointing because they had spend a big amount of money to take the picture to see whether there is a water on the moon, but it worth nothing as the picture was flurry. What happened to the $79m?? Fly with wind. Imaging that, if we use that many to help others who are in trouble or help poor country to develop.

  30. To be truth I don’t really understand what is this talking about, Never mind I’ll try. From what I observed, this is all about spending a lot of money on some wasting stuff. Is it? For me it is not worth. Why don’t we use all the money for poor people, especially kids. They are our next generation. What will happen if they don’t have a better life to be exact they don’t even exist anymore? For the purpose they done it are only for divining for water in oddest way? Really ridiculous. What for? Our earth also cover by water in ratio 2:1 to the land. What else they want? To create history? Sorry to say it is kind a nonsense.
